Here's a brief point that nobody ever brings up: white people want black people to succeed.
It isn't for any noble, altruistic reason - but for selfish ones. Whites are sick and tired of the poverty and crime that has engulfed entire cities and turned them into bombed out hell-holes too scary to drive through at high noon. A largely educated and industrious black minority population would mean more money and better lifestyles for everyone - especially for blacks; but whitey would make more money too (more people walking around with educations and jobs tend to do that) and "white flight" would reverse.

He summoned the courage to talk to his dad. After a long conversation, he realized how much his dad cared. All he could think of was how he’d almost thrown it all away.
