In loving memory

My wife's pet rat lost her fight with cancer this morning. She is (understandably) distraught, but what I don't get, is how sad it's made me. I must say, I'm not a great fan of rats, but this one was undeniably special. She loved human attention, even more than playing with her fellow rats.
She came to us as a "surrender" from a local primary (elementary) school. Which means they were unable to provide proper care for her and gave her to us. When she first arrived she was very ill, she hadn't been fed a healthy diet, and had a bad lung infection. We nursed her back to health, and found a beautiful, loving little animal with an extremely gentile nature.
I'm going to miss her beyond the compassion for my wife's pain.
