Don't know what to do with my life...

Name: Anonymous 2007-04-14 21:57 ID:cT0yhpCd

so help me out.  I am 19, have a car and a job.  Other than that, it's kinda up in the air.  The only thing I can see myself doing career-wise would have to be computer-related, but even that is too vague to work with.  I'm just not sure what I want to do.  Cisco certification maybe?

In before trolls.

Well if you really don't know what to do, research the world and find a way to make a lot of money. Do a course in business studies in college, then go to a school of economics in a reputable university and write an interesting thesis. Whatever profession you enter, complete your series 7 and build up a small portfolio.

Take up a few temporary jobs before you try to decide on a real career.

Offshore drilling starts at 45 grand a year for most companies, and it's two weeks on two weeks off.  You could get a part time job for the two weeks off and make around sixty grand a year with no college degree.

you're leaps and bounds ahead of losers like me.  All I did when I was 19 was go to university, pay serious coin, and years of time to get a useless degree that does nothing for me.  Whatever you are doing now is more of a future than university students have (in many cases)

and what are you doing now? I mean if you went to college for 4 years you should be able to get a decent good paying job.

You should look into furthering your education in computers.  No matter what, you have never learned enough.  If you do know enough, and are creative and good at explaining some things, you could also try to become a teacher.  Other than that. it all depends on what your strengths are when it comes to computers.

Name: Anonymous 2007-04-16 1:22 ID:9GqsKMrl

depends. you'll probably find yourself changing jobs a lot anyway at your age and this industry is up and down all the bloody time.

i started by scripting movements for sprites, then worked in printing industry scripting postscript files, then i worked as systems admin and now I work in gfx design... bit of everything really. Oh and if you ever meet the "I know it all" types just remember - there are WAY too many areas of IT to know it all.

Basically anything that isnt going to send you postal is good :)

Go here for a second: http://www.your-dream-career.com/

I have nothing to do with this site. I just came across it and it has kinda sorta helped me to some extent.

You have to figure out what you like and then find out what careers there are that allow you to do what you like. I think it's a matter of asking yourself the right questions.

I don't know what the hell I'm doing either.

Name: Anonymous 2007-04-16 2:57 ID:DFAgPKJA

Fuck computers.  Seriously, if you've got nothing better than "I do computers" the world will use you to wipe its ass.  Masters in CS or GTFO.

Even if other careers net you the same meager salary, at least you aren't the fucking computer guy.
