Emo sidefringe

Hiding so they dont have to look at people?
Or shielding so people dont have to look at them?

If it were so people didn't have to look at them, why would they go so fucking insane with the rest of their appearance?
It's supposed to hide half of their face, making them seem "mysterious" and "deep."
