Does Humanity Hate The Earth?

Name: Anonymous 2006-11-03 11:31

Since our rise to prosperity we have done nothing but kill off species, burn off fossil fuels, and tear down massive amounts of wilderness. I'm convinced that we fucking hate this place.

Every time I see trees being cleared for another Quiznos or another Starbucks it makes me fucking sick because there's another one just a couple miles up the road. When I read the article about edible sea life being almost gone by 2050 it made me sick because I'm sure SO MUCH of that stuff goes unused for the sake of convenience.

I blame the mindset that says, "well, if it is here now then it will always be here". I know several ultra-conservative nut jobs who actually subscribe to that line of thought concerning fossil fuels. There's an urgency to find a cleaner, safer energy that is being suppressed because of the mindset I'm talking about.

It's all just really sad. I don't want to see the kind of disrepair the Earth will be in when I'm 90.

Did you know that over a hundred years ago, the eastern US used to have lots of parakeets?  The Carolina parakeet's numbers were severly depleted as we cut down their habitat for our own use.  The few that remained eventually died out.

Parakeets!  For fuck sakes, we used to have parakeets there.  I love parakeets.  I never even new about them until a few weeks ago.  As things die out, new generations of people barely give a shit because they never grew up with them and so don't miss them.
