NARA -- A man under indictment for abducting, sexually assaulting and murdering a young girl has asked the judge trying his case to sentence him to death, his defense lawyer said.
Kaoru Kobayashi, 37, has sent several letters to Judge Tetsuya Okuda at the Nara District Court on June 27 and July 10, after his trial was concluded, asking that he be punished with death.
"I would like to be sentenced to death," the letters partly read. "I have no confidence in being able to rehabilitate myself." The court subsequently sent the letters back to his lawyer Yoshio Takano.
