Friday, August 4, 2006 at 19:13 EDT
TOKYO — Two police officers on Friday fired shots at a man wielding knives, seriously injuring him, after he inflicted injuries on one of the officers in Tokyo's Katsushika Ward, police said.
A 46-year-old police sergeant was slashed in the left arm, and the man, naked from the waist up, was shot in the left shoulder and right leg, they said.
A male passer-by, aged around 40, sustained minor injuries when he fell down while the man with knives was chasing him.
The man, aged around 30, was arrested at the scene for alleged assault and illegal possession of weapons.
The police said they received a call around 10:40 a.m. that a man was swinging knives on a street.
The man did not drop the knives when the officers told him to do so.
They then fired two shots near his feet as a warning, but he proceeded toward them, so they fired two more shots directly at him.
