How does one go about getting a job in construction? Do they generally list these things in the classifieds in the newspaper or do you have to go to some kind of construction contractor or what?

It depends on the experience and what your going for. I just started working with a contractor friend of mine and had no experience.
I call myself a laborer, but I do everything, good and bad.
If your from Southern California, it is hard because contractors don't want to pay legal citizens for thier work.
They rather break all laws of this land to make a few extra dollars.
It cost to much with insurance, etc.. and also, americans only take jobs that they can afford to live on. For the most part.
Thank God that I have a home business that allows me to make money by helping others with a N.Y.S.E. company. If it wasn't for that, it would be hard to live here on the pay I get.
I make $15/ hour, isn't crap here, but I have a friend who was looking for a job in construction.
Even though he had a bit of experience and my boss was looking for extra help, he never called the American, my friend.
But Yet, he will go to a street corner and get an Illegal/criminal for about 1/2 the price, paid on the same day in cash, of what would have to be paid to an american.
Even though I am in the construction field and my boss is a friend of mine, eventually he will be turned in to the ICE, and any other law enforcement agencies that deal with illegal criminals.
I wish you the best of luck in your search for a construction job.
Also, if your in the midwest or any other areas of America, be ready in the near future for your wages being cut.
Remember, if minimum wage, for example is $7/ an hour and Business owners can get criminals at 3-4 dollars an hour, you are out of luck in the job market.
You will either have to take a lower pay or not work. That is what California and the southern states are so angry. The other states say it isn't my problem, but one of the largest illegal/criminal build ups is in Illinois, mostly in Chicago area.
