As I see it, right now the 4chan demographic is mostly anime fans, and that's only because it's based on a Japanese concept. All it really needs is activity from the non-anime community for it to start catching on in the 'real' world.
More general discussion (as opposed to anime/manga/japanese culture themed discussion) is likely to keep more 'real' people in here. After that, it'll grow naturally via word of mouth.
