the spread of 2ch

Many world4ch'ers and other assorted wapanese have the dream of an English anonymous BBS to rival 2ch.net, which will probably never happen.

But how did 2channel itself reach such levels of popularity? just through word of mouth/links?

I don't really know what I am talking about, but I believe Japanese people are more community oriented, and therefore don't have the rain of idiots that any anonymous western bbs is likely to have.

I'd like to know how many idiots you get posting on 2chan.
