Jobs for Language Majors

Name: Anonymous 2012-01-22 21:57

Sup /lang/?

Did you major in a language? If so what job are you doing now/ what is your career path?

I'm majoring in Japanese and trying to get into translation after I graduate. Honestly chinese is way superior though

It would be nice if we could have a thread where people talk about /lang/ related jobs, since I suspect some of you may have them, or be searching for them.

I'm a student in Translation and Interpreting

contrary to popular belief it involves not only Legal responsibility, you can go to jail if you're working at a police investigation or in court and you intentionally make shit up, but a lot of time spent researching and constant practicing of your skills

I plan to apply for an EU paid traineeship that lasts 3 months when I graduate, maybe then continue to get my master's degree

I repeat again, it's a profession that you need to go prepare for, knowing the language is like having the tools in your garage, it sure as hell doesn't mean you can start working as a mechanic. The only job you can hope for if you don't get certified as a Translator is to be a teacher for little children.
It's one thing that constantly annoys me, when people take job languages lightly. One translation mistake was responsable for the failure of a NASA mission.
