Consider the phrase

He is the friend of mine.

Why "mine" is used here?
He is the friend of my --- what?

They are not exactly the same. "My obkect" could mean you only have one object. "An object of mine" implies that the object is merely one object from an array of many objects that all belong to the speaker.
