The JLPT is also not that great of an indicator of ability...I passed Level 1 about 4 years ago. You don't have to write at all on the test, and the stuff tested on Level 1 is meh in terms of usefulness.

And JLPT was only used originally for people who wanted to work in japan with teaching or for higher up company's.
