Why is english the international language?

A lot of people speak it.

Because the British Empire was the largest, most influential power of the history of the world.

One word: Conquest.
The Brits conquered a huge empire, and held it long enough that they started using English.

USA (and Britain) also had the luxury of fighting their two single-most destructive wars on foreign soil. When those wars were over, both (particularly USA) had their infrastructure (and entertainment industry) not only intact, but running full throttle. The other nations had their hands full rebuilding their own countries (and reputation).
