German Grammar Question

Name: Anonymous 2010-01-01 7:45

Quick question, does "Was Lust sie tun?" or "Habt sie Lust, was zu tun?" mean, "What do you want to do?"? I haven't been learning German for very long and the textbook didn't explain this very well.

Name: Anonymous 2010-01-01 8:24

Or would it work better like "Was wünschen sie tun?"?

Name: Anonymous 2010-01-01 10:53

Germanfag here.
It depends.
wollen = want to
möchten = would like to (roughly translated)
tun/machen = do/make
"What do you want to do?" is in German
"Was willst/möchtest du machen/tun?", if you adress a friend, a person that you know well etc.
or "Was wollt/möchtet ihr machen/tun?" if you adress more than one person that you know well.
or "Was wollen/möchten Sie machen/tun?" if you adress a person that you don't know very well or that is in a higher position than you, for example your chef or people you meet the first time.

Thanks Germanfag. I thought it might have been some grammatical thing that turned it into "what do you want to do?" instead of "What do you want?".

question for the germanfag of post #3... i learnt a phrase of a similar nature. it was "was ist los?" which i was taught was basically "what's up?" or "what's going on?" in an informal kind of manner to a friend or person you know well.

that sound right or was someone fucking with me?

Name: Anonymous 2010-01-03 5:58

That's totally right. "Was ist los?" is basically the direct German equivalent to "What's up?" and can be used in the same ways.

True, but wouldn't it be better translated as "What is wrong?"

No, "Was ist los?" does not necessarily implicate something negative is happening. It's neutral like "What's going on/what's up".

no. the question is HOW you say it. "WAS ist los?!?!?!" can be a phrase to start a fight, a concearned tone asks what's wrong, was is los (shortend) can be like `sup.

WAS IST LOS DREIZEHN ?!?1?1!?!?1

"WAS ist los?!?!?!"
Is this implying that an agressive utterance would have the emphasis on the first word?

Name: Anonymous 2010-01-06 6:40

Both mean nothing because they are completely wrong. The closest would be:
"Hast du Lust auf etwas?"
"Was mochtest do tun?"
(german signs may be missing)

Name: Anonymous 2010-01-06 15:35

Name: jimbo 2010-01-08 12:02

The correct form would be:
"Haben Sie Lust etwas zu tun?" ("Do you want to do sth?")
"Was möchten Sie tun?" ("What do you want to do?")

But this is formal German. Normally when you speak to a friend you say "Du":
"Hast du Lust etwas zu tun?"("Do you want to do sth?")
"Was möchtest du tun?"("What do you want to do?")

Some more phrases by a Germanfag:

English - Formal/Informal German
What the hell is happening? - Was zum Teufel ist hier los?
What would like to do today? - Was würden Sie/würdest du heute gern unternehmen/tun?
Would you like to ...? - Würden Sie/Würdest du gern ...?

Contractions (grammatically wrong and very informal):
Wanna ...? - Willste ...? (from: willst du)
Sup, bro? - S'geht'n, Alter? (from: was geht denn)

OP here, I realized my grammar was terribly wrong there and cleared up my error. Another German grammar question, would, "wir verbrachten unsere Ferien auf dem Lande" be the correct order to say, "we spent our holidays in the country"? Or do holidays count as an expression of time?

Name: Anonymous 2010-01-14 14:17

>>25
There is no need to use "unsere" as you use "wir". It is obvious you didn't spend someone elses holidays.

>>26
Germanfag here.
"Wir verbrachten unsere Ferien auf dem Lande." sounds totally right. But "Wir haben unsere Ferien auf dem Land verbracht." would be the most natural way since German speakers tend to prefer the perfect tense in normal speech. Of course you could use "die Ferien" instead of "unsere Ferien", but "unsere Ferien" sounds fine too.

Name: Anonymous 2010-01-15 16:48

>>27
As you are German then you probably don't know too much about your native language. Imperfect is actually the default simple folk way of speech. Perfect is literature and everyday speech of people who want to be perceived as educated and sophisticated.
I would expect to hear "Wir verbrachten die Ferien auf dem Lande" (although it is more probable someone says just the name of the place) or its form in Perfect.

Thanks Germanfags, what's the main difference between imperfect and perfect? Would it be similar to the use of "got" in the place of "have" in English?

More testing my abilities to translate in German, it would sure help if my textbook had answers. Does, "Ihr Vater und ihre Mutter baten den Lehrer, Sie zu entschuldigen" mean, "Their father and mother asked the teacher to excuse them"?

what

Why are you trolling /lang/, you won't get many answers here. If you aren't a troll, you are probably just totally retarded.

Perfekt: Ich habe einen Mann gesehen. (I saw a man) Sounds right and normal. Used in everyday speech by almost everyone. Can be used without any problemes in literature as well.
Präteritum (Imperfekt lolwut, it's actually called Präteritum): Ich sah einen Mann. Sounds somewhat unnatural in normal speech, educated/sophisticated if you want so. Common in literature.

Some of the southern German dialects don't even have any Präteritum (imperfect lol) at all. The Präteritum is still used in the northern parts of Germany, but its importance is declining and the Perfekt is usually prefered. The only verbs that I can think of where the Präteritum is used very frequently are "sein" and "haben".

tl;dr troll

>>29
Your sentence is correct, but you should write "sie" instead of "Sie" since "Sie" implies that you address a person you don't know very well etc. I guess it's already explained somewhere in this thread.

http://blog.sina.com.cn/s/blog_46e7ba410100gq4e.html
