Self-study language

Name: Anonymous 2009-12-17 17:53

So, I'm thinking about starting a selfstudy language in january, mostly to give me something to do (I have a lot of free time) and also because I'm curious to see how far I could come.

I already speak/understand a few languages(English, German, French, Dutch, Latin, Greek) and am currently majoring in Japanese. My preference would be an asian language but that might become a bit much with me studying Japanese at the same time. Another language I considered was Swedish due to it's easy nature (for those that already know some Germanic languages) but what's keeping me from it atm is the uselessness of understanding Swedish.

Any tips/recommendations for languages that are suitable for selfstudy?

If you've got french and latin down i'd give spanish a go. It should be easy with experience two other romance languages, hell when I was taking latin in high school (I've since forgotten most of it) I could understand like ~30% of written spanish.

It's also extremely useful and near impossible to mix up with japanese.

If you want something useful, stick with the listed supercentral languages.

Since you wanted an asian language I would recommend Malay/Indonesian. It's pretty easy and uses the latin alphabet so it probably won't be too difficult to learn while learning Japanese.

Did I say I had no clue what language next? No, I didn't. I was asking for advice/opinions though, dickhead.

Spanish seems like a good choice, I don't have a lot with Spanish culture/people in general though.. Gonna keep it in mind.

How do-able would Korean be? I always hear that you have quite and advantage if you know Japanese, it doesn't have kanji (which saves me a lot of trouble) and I kinda like Korea itself.

God damn it you fucktard, just choose a language you like faggot, pros and cons for single languages are obvious.

Totally managed to miss the point of this thread, good going asshole.

You wanted recommendations for your next language. If you can't do some research yourself then you are retarded. Usefulness and difficulty of certain languages are quite obvious if you know how to use the internet. What do you expect to hear here?

That's what you got so far:
"Learn Spanish, so useful, so easy." - anon
"Indonesian, pretty easy for an Asian language." - anon
"Stick to supercentral languages, it's useful." - anon
"Any Asian language but I'm not sure." - you (aka giant faggot)
"Swedish, easy but useless. I'm not sure."- you
"Korean? Don't know, is it doable [retarded question anyway]? I like Korea. But I'm a huge faggot and I'm not sure." - you

Wow it's amazing, this thread is full of words of wisdom and things that google doesn't know. So just fucking decide yourself.
You like Korea? Learn Korean. Easy as fuck.

By the way, in my humble opinion you should learn Esperanto. It's quite gay and that's why you and Esperanto would be a perfect team of faggotry.

I hope my recommendation helps you to decide.

OP is asking for tips on how to learn a language by himself, not which language to learn but tips on how to learn one.

OP check out http://how-to-learn-any-language.com/forum/ has a lot of info in it about languages and learning them.
