Multiples languages at once - retarded?

Name: Anonymous 2009-06-08 18:48

Hey, a common "debate" about language learning, especially in this digital age, seems to be about learning more than one at a time. I mean, we all know that guy - the guy who says he is learning a list of 20 obscure languages who knows little more than a sentence in each. We all agree he's a dick. But what about actually studying more than one at a time? I'm learning Chinese right now, been at it for about a year, and while it's definitely going to stay my main subject for years, I'd like to have a little something else on the side, just as a little hobby. I'm considering Korean or a few others (I dunno why, but I just find it interesting).

TLDR Am I being an ADD faggot, or can more than 1 language be legitimately studied at the same time, so long as you don't lose  sight of your goals?

Err, just don't do it.

It works for some, not so for others.

I think it should be fine, as long as you get to use all of them regularly. It might also be helpful if the languages you are learning are from the same language family or similar to each other, especially if you already know another language from the family. It really helps if the grammar or words are already familiar to you from another language.

I still wouldn't start learning many languages from scratch at the same time myself though.

I'd advise you to stick with just Chinese for a little longer, at least another year before trying dual languages. But yes, it is possible, you just have to be able to keep up with both of them actively, so you need a lot of time. :)

You already speak English, why bother studying another language? English is all you need in today's world.

I'm not one of those fags who learns Chinese 'cause I think it's going to become a global language or something. I just really like Chinese history and culture and girls :3

That's an even stupider reason to learn a language.

I used to learn German, French and Irish in school. When I did the Junior Cert (3 years of German and French, 11 years of Irish) I got an A, B and D respectively. Learning two or more languages in school is pretty easy, but I'm trying to teach myself Finnish at the moment and that's more than enough to fully occupy myself.

So learning for fun is stupid, now?
Lemme guess, you're a Yank?

Learning Finnish is a nice way to fuck your brain. Good luck with that.

Hey, some people like to learn obsolete languages. I say all praise them.

Name: Anonymous 2009-06-19 21:32

It really depends on you personally & when you start learning it. I know 1 girl who got a degree in spanish from syracuse which to me seems a waste. I was never good at spanish in school & dropped it during my junior year since I already spoke 3 & it started to fuck my english up.

What an interesting choice of word. Would you mind telling me which languages aren't obsolete?

Japanese

Japanese is the only language worth learning imo. Unfortunately I was born German and I hate it alot.

If someone were to learn to languages at once, which would be more effective: learning two related languages, or two unrelated language.
If we learn to similar languages at once (like indonesian and malay, or dutch and afrikaans), would we get them confused?
