Preparing for Japanese 211

Name: Drizzt 2008-12-31 2:26

Hey /speak/,

I'm going into my third semester of Japanese at my local college.  We use the Yookoso textbooks and I have just finished the first book.

There is a trip to japan at the end of the semester and I want to be ready.

How and what would you suggest that i study and do before that time?  Is there a weekly schedule any of you have set up for yourselves while learning?  Japanese has been giving me a lot of trouble, far more than french, spanish, and dutch did....

日本語は話せますか?

Name: Anonymous 2008-12-31 11:56

日本語を話したら、日本語を話すのが上手になりますよ。
だから、毎日、日本語を話しみるといいですね。
漢字を読めますか?
できなったら、漢字を読むのを習うといいですよ。

To people who know japanese better,
I've just completed my third semester of japanese. Its not the best in the world, but if its at least competent then I haven't completely failed.

Just get as much practice speaking as you can. You have a TA right? Just get him/her to correct anything you say wrong and improve your speech. Also get some listening comprehension by listening to some podcasts or watch some raw's etc etc.

Weekly schedule for learning for me is.... (Not taking classes right now self study)

Go over a lesson in my book. Review lesson for two days. Practice lesson. Learn 20 kanji a week. Review. Reading/writing practice

「すみません」は便利な言葉です。
人に話しかける時、あやまる時、感謝する時に使えます。
あなたが困った時は、日本人に「すみません」と声をかけてみてください。大抵の日本人はあなたを助けたいと思うはずです。
あとは、あなたが何に困っているかを伝えられるかの問題です。
日本旅行であなたが困りそうなケースについて予想してみてください。
それを説明するために必要な単語を覚え、日本人の返答を聞き取るために
必要な単語を覚えるといいと思います。

If you study one hour every day, it shouldn't be a problem.

Let's learn the words that seem to become necessary.

~にいきたい
I want to go ~
これは、いくらですか?
How much is this?

etc

Moji No Benkyou (1) is a free Windows software that helps you studying Japanese characters (Hiragana and Katakana).

If you're in your third semester, you should have a basic grasp of grammar. You need to practice listening to a native speaker, and building your vocabulary.

I suggest either finding some Japanese children's shows and watching them, or watching some anime and really listen instead of just reading the subs.

And if you're going to Japan, you're going to need to read Kanji. Practice your butt off writing and reading Kanji. I usually spent about 2-3 hours a week of just drilling Kanji.
