ITT overrated languages

Name: Anonymous 2008-01-09 12:40

Sanskrit and Japanese are two.

The former is ugly as hell and the latter not as special as stupid animu faggots think.

Latin = (...) sentances are really damn short
wat?
You have never read any Latin written by anyone not writing for first-graders, have you? Most classical authors average about a page per sentence.

listen to this man.

one sentence chosen at random from Caesar's "De Bello Gallico VI":

Labienus, hostium cognito consilio, sperans temeritate eorum fore aliquam dimicandi facultate, praesidio quinque cohortium impedimentis relicto cum xxv cohortibus magnoque equitatu contra hostem proficiscitur et mille passuum intermitio spatio castra communit.

one sentance chosen at random from Cicero's "Invectivarum In L. Catilinam (Oratio Prima)":

Quare quoniam id, quod est primum et quod huius imperii disciplinaeque maiorum proprium est, facere nondem audeo, faciam  id, quod est ad severitatem lenius et ad communem salutem utilius.

seriously, if you think Latin has short sentences, you are in high school Latin 1 and the most advanced sentence you've ever seen is 'puellae pupas amant'.

I heard turkish was the simplest azn language to learn

then again, I would expect it to be virtually useless

Turkish is VERY agglutinative, which usually is a sign of not being simple. I'd imagine Persian or Hindu to be a lot simpler.

>>39

I like both Arabic and Turkish. Hebrew not so much. Arabic sounds passionate. Hebrew... not so much. It's like Arabic corrupted into a shitload of "sh" and "tzv" sounds, imitating some sort of disgusting French/Polish mixture.

Well, I meant, excluding Indo-European languages, which I assume would be a lot simpler to learn because they are closer to our languages.

Name: Anonymous 2008-02-10 15:58

>>45
Well guess what, Hindi and Persian are indeed Indo-European languages.

Name: Anonymous 2008-02-10 16:21

>>46
Thank you for repeating what I said - to stress its importance, I presume.

Name: Anonymous 2008-02-10 16:26

>>47
Uh no, you said the exact opposite. You said that besides Indo-European languages, Hindi and Persian would be simpler.
When you said "excluding Indo-European languages", you placed Persian and Hindi out of that group, when they actually belong to it.

Name: Anonymous 2008-02-10 16:53

>>48
No, you misunderstood what I said. I meant "excluding Indo-European languages" to asian languages, which was the subject of my initial post, and the point was Hindi and Persian WERE a part of Indo-European languages, hence why they were simpler.

My original comparison was meant to be between altaic/japonic/uralic languages.

Chinese.

>>50
How so?

Name: Anonymous 2008-02-11 11:41

>>51
Too many people speak it.

Since when is agglutinative = hard? Ok, words like Çekoslovakyalılaştıramadıklarımızdanmışsınız ("You are said to be one of those that we couldn't manage to convert to a Czechoslovak")could invoke sentiments like that, but generally, I believe it makes little difference.

Turkish is extremely regular in structure- rivaling artificial languages, because the whole language was virtually re-done in the twentieth century. Also, words are generated from some number of roots by adding defined affixes, so even if you hear some word for the first time in your life, you can guess what it means.

Though stuff like vowel harmony could be confusing, phonetic latin script etc. probably make it easier for many.

But, all in all, it is a pretty useless language to learn unless you have an obsessive-compulsive interest with the people.

All languages but English are useless and therefore, hobbies.

HOW DARE YOU IMPLY JAPANESE IS USELESS

Name: Anonymous 2008-02-12 15:04

>>54
Not if you like your literature and poems not raped by translators.

Name: Anonymous 2008-02-12 15:14

>>56
Literature and poems are hobbies, so my point remains.
Also, faggotry. Real men only read technical books and technical translators tend to be accurate.

>think I learnt enough english already to speak in it

If I were you, I'd keep learning English for a bit.

Japanese is the fourth most popular language on the internet (next to English, Chinese, Spanish, in that order)
Useful in today's society I would say.
Sanskrit on the other hand, no use.

Name: Anonymous 2008-02-20 3:56

>>60
Bullshit.
Everyone worth talking to knows English.

Name: Anonymous 2008-02-20 7:13

>>60
But will it be useful in 2018? You've gotta think about these things.

Name: Anonymous 2008-02-20 10:17

Useful if you're a weeaboo, you'll never need it unless you have a job which involves going to Japan.

The only useful languages internationally are English, Español, Français, Chinese, and Japanese.

you misspelled 日本語 and 汉语

Name: Anonymous 2008-02-21 5:12

Wrong.
Only English.

Name: Anonymous 2008-02-21 6:23

Scrap French and Japanese, and replace them with Russian and Arabic. Growing markets = important.

>>67
Keep thinking that.

Name: Anonymous 2008-02-21 6:40

>>68
Of course, I'm correct, why would I change my mind?

Name: Anonymous 2008-02-21 7:57

Sure thing.

Iranians are not considered Arabs because they're not ethnically Arabic and do not speak the Arabic language.

Name: Anonymous 2008-02-24 15:32

Iranians = Persians = Indo-European Aryans != Arabs

Lern2difference

Name: Anonymous 2008-02-24 18:06

I don't believe Persian has nothing to do with Arabic. They both use the same script, they both have a heck of a lot of similar words and the speakers of both look the same and smell the same.
