Right now im takeing japanese in school and know the basics and basic conversation.
I wondering if Japanese would be the best language for me to learn. There's a giant culture out there that i want to be in but i need to know Japanese. Or, could i instead of wasteing a couple years of my life and take a different language? Say French or German, because those are most likly thought of to the average English speaking person when somebody else speaks about languages. I need to know because i like japanese but am not sure if i will ever need to use it (go there, meet japanese people etc..).

If you take a language and do not enjoy it outside of class, I don't think you'll get far. I barely remember any Spanish and people in English Canada usually can't speak French despite their High School classes.

no point, china are making English one of their national languages by 2011, so by the time you have mastered Chinese well enough to use it in business it will be too late =(

German is the most useful language after English for the intellectual or grad school student. Many of the greatest works in mathematics, philosophy, literature, opera etc are in German.

Considering that your first statement was nothing short of absurd, yes. You need to say more.

its pretty basic. by 2011 china are going to have china a national language. they are employing native English speakers to teach them. they are pretty desperate about it too. If you stay long enough they give you money to pay for the flights and travel around china

Yes, the concept is basic. I understand the actual sentence "China will make English a national language". But I don't believe this reflects reality. I know many Westerners who work as English teachers in China, but I have never heard of anyone being employed by the government. Your pay checks are signed by the Ministry of Education?

We don't need a Ministry Of Education on my planet, biaaaatch.

Ministry of Education was formed and run by the Chinese government. So, in turn i am being paid by the Chinese government.
Pays okay too. If your decent at Chinese already i would recommend it. So long as you don't party too hard then you should save quite a bit of money

So that is a yes? You are employed by the MOE? I've been thinking about teaching, but I know very little Chinese. So it's the bottom of the food chain for me, ie agencies.
