Portuguese and Spanish are very similar. My girlfriend from Venezuela can understand Portuguese when it is spoken. At my university there is a specific Portuguese class offered to native Spanish speakers. They promise that one year in the program will give you near-native Portuguese ability.
Of course, when I went to see Passion of the Christ w/my gf, she could understand their Latin, too.
