Closing the gap

In order to master a language, one must be able to take in and send out information in that language without mentally translating it to and from the native language first.  I, cannot do that.  Any ideas?

listen to music/tvshow/movies in that language
try to speak to people in the language
and always try to associate the words in your language with the one in the language you're learning

Oh, like a reverse-translation!  I've never thought of that before.

Is there a term for this mental translating?  It's hard to find information (google) on it.
