I'm planning on teaching myself some Gaeilge and then spend a year studying in England, with hopefully several trips to my ancestral home of Eire.

Thank you for that useful link. The best way to learn reading is to study grammar and frequently attempt to translate documents that have translations readily available, or that are easily interpreted by context clues. I learned a LOT of French and Italian this way (without ever even studying the grammer, merely building on the Spanish I learned in junior high), and can read some of my friend's Chinese blog based on my Japanese knowledge.
