Learning Kanji

How do I learned kanji? Individually? A few characters in a compound? To me, it seems like learning the individual characters would be like learning how to read and write English by memorizing prefixes and suffixes. Am I looking at it wrong?

It worked for me. It could have been better. Actually, come to think of it, a master troll wouldn't have gotten caught so readily. I guess he fails.
