Learning Kanji

How do I learned kanji? Individually? A few characters in a compound? To me, it seems like learning the individual characters would be like learning how to read and write English by memorizing prefixes and suffixes. Am I looking at it wrong?

What is the best way to go about learning kanji? Learn each character individually (on'yomi, kun'yomi, English meaning, stroke order) like that, or learn them as parts of compounds- 上げる, for example.
