Gif making

What program can I use to rip clips from an .AVI file and make an animated gif out of them?  Jasc Animation Shop is the only one that I can think of.  Is there a way I can do this with ImageReady?  If so, how?  I'm totally fucking clueless. >=(

Mplayer can do it directly, e.g. "mplayer video.avi -vo gif89a:fps=15.0:filename=test.gif"

I'm sure it can do this for just some clip range, read the huge help file / man page.
