Why did Nintendo sell out to them and turn their back on their 20+ years loyal fan base? Unlike these idiots buying every new EA Madden, Need For Speed, and fps game that comes out I actually appreciate a game that took a few years to make that stars characters like Mario, Sonic, or Solid Snake.
Mario was always a "casual game". All you did in the first Super Mario Bros. was jump and run and swim to try to not get killed in the process. And if you haven't noticed, people buying the newest EA Madden, or sports game, or FPS game is nothing new.
Although I do have to say that I don't agree with the way the industry seems to be heading.

Nowadays, it's all about waiting for the next good game. Which usually only occurs once every year or so.

How do you define "casual"? Something that's easy, or something that's fun? Nintendo has always been about making games that are fun to play. Naturally, if a game is too difficult it loses much of its fun-factor due to frustration, so of course Nintendo is going to be making games on the easier side. Is that really a bad thing? I've always felt that games were meant to be enjoyed. If you hate fun games because they're easy (thereby making them "casual"), why are you even playing video games in the first place? You might as well do something difficult and frustrating that's worthwhile, like learn an instrument or get a girlfriend. At least then you'd have something to show for the hours of torture you put yourself through.

Went to Wikipedia, bless 'em, and got a pretty good definition.
"Casual games can have any type of gameplay, and fit in any genre. They are typically distinguished by their simple rules and lack of commitment required in contrast to more complex hardcore games."
Anybody else willing to go with this?

Money. After Microsoft ruined gaming Nintendo needed to make quick cash and thus the Wii
I think casual games are defined by who plays them. Take TF2 for example. That game was obviously designed for pubs and women to play, but people play it competitively in leagues and take it seriously. I don't think there's any such thing as a casual game, just a casual gamer.

Tetris is a casual game no matter what.

hardcore gamers are gamers that dont care if the game developers will make the game 68% more complex to play to get only 15% of better gameplay.
based on that you can think what casual gamers are.

Hate on the casual gamers all you want but without them, our industry is going to fall apart and die.

How exactly did Microsoft ruin gaming? I would say Sony is, if anyone.

In the old days Nintendo would limit the amount of games third-party developers could release every year. This would ensure that the third-party licensees would put more money, effort, and quality into their video games.

So it's a facet of the video game industry not regulating itself? That would explain a lot of the reasons for its decline.

>>1 Dumb lolcats of the internet would beg to disagree with your argument, and yes they eat this whole EA shit up.
Meanwhile, Mario Sonic and Snake have all burned in the eternal pit of destruction, thanks to Halo.
