Wormhole: New Ground

Does anyone remember Wormhole: Newground? It was an online java game that was pretty popular a while back until they closed in 2002 because they couldn't afford to pay their bandwidth fees.

Anyway, for anyone who remembers it, I want to remake it as a downloadable game (so I don't have to worry about hosting servers), but I'm trying to igure out the best way to go about it. I've considered doing it as an HL2 mod, as the SDK has all the important networking stuff basically figured out, but I have very little experience making multiplayer games.

Does anyone here have any experience with making games, specifically multiplayer games? the game itself was originally a 2d games iwth vector graphics, so I don't many other difficulties coming up.

Not sure if this thread is still alive or not but i do remember the game you are referring to I used to play it on an old social networking Site Bolt.com (most people probably don't remember that site). The game was a combination of asteroid mixed with engaging multiplayer which you could send bombs through your wormhole to try and kill your oponent.
