Metal Gear Solid

Name: small green text 2008-04-18 11:51

There is nothing in the entire world that makes me feel the way Metal Gear Solid (PSX) does.

It is truly epic in every way.

There's no Metal Gear 3. There is, however, a Metal Gear Solid 3. Which fucking owns.

All the MGS games are awesome. Can't wait for MGS4.

I gotta buy the original Metal Gear now that I have a NES.

Metal Gear Solid... man, it just wasn't my thing. The half-hour story sequences were cool at the time, but when I take a step back, I realize that I hardly spent any time actually playing the game. I snapped a few dudes' necks, and attempted to shoot a few, but the top-down camera makes using guns damn near impossible. It was cool, and I can see why some people would love it, but I couldn't get into it. There wasn't quite enough action and espionage, it was more shooting one or two dudes and then grabbing a bowl of popcorn for the story (which, I'll admit, kicks ass).

Yes. I don't mind the story sequences at all in MGS but I find that this sometimes comes at the expense of the gameplay. I mean you can beat most MGS games in two hours (tops 3) if you skip through everything. I don't mind Kojima's wacky stories, but would it hurt to have more gameplay as well?

Maybe if you know exactly what you're doing and just run through the whole game. MGS4 had roughly 9 hours of cutscenes and codec calls, and the game took me around 23 hours to beat. That's 14 hours of gameplay, which is much longer than most non-rpgs these days. It's been awhile since I've played the other 3, but I guarantee that I spent much longer than 2 or 3 hours actually playing the games. They're at least as long as your average FPS, if not longer.

Oh no no no dear friend. I don't know about MGS4 (since I've yet to play it) but I can guarantee you that if you don't dick around (eg not going for the frogs in MGS3) there's not actually that much to see. The thing is that the game is artificially enlongated by backtracking, giving you the impression that it's longer. But I can assure you that if you skip all of the cutscenes you can beat any one of the first three MGS games in less than 3 hours. If it's your first time playing maybe five hours or so. And comparing anything to an fps is complete fail, considering that most modern FPS games can barely struggle to reach 12 hours. Call me spoiled, but I like my games to at least have 20 hours of gameplay on a first playthrough.

You're spoiled.  Black was an awesome FPS, even though skilled players could beat it pretty quickly.  I suck, so after a gajillion hours I'm still trying the last stage.

Should have just made a series of movies.  That's all they are anyway.

Name: Anonymous 2008-07-06 15:34

i figured MGS was like reading a very interactive book. Its mostly story on the outside, with the gameplay being the cream filling in the middle

Name: Anonymous 2008-07-06 18:28

It's flawed.

I suggest that you download the MSX version.. Hideo Kojima really looks down on the NES version.

(it also has a crappy translation "UH OH THE TRUCK HAVE STARTED TO MOVE")
