Any pointers on how to play Civ?

I'm not a serious gamer, but I'm a fan of RTS games. I've played AOE 2, Age of Mythology, Rise of Nations and Warcraft 3 (still play this whenever I'm bored). I recently bought Civilization 3 (Yeah it's very old, but I got it for a buck). But it seems to have a steep learning curve! Even when playing the tutorial, it's not clear what I'm supposed to do next. Any pointers on where I should start for such turn-based games?
