Why don't you just use the /v/ imageboard like normal people?!?

I go to both, as does many others.

Sometimes, you just don't want to see pics, so this is pleasing.

Long-term thread retention is still the big reason.  The last time a /v/ thread lasted longer than a few hours was years ago, before the various newfag floods that have occurred since then.

80% of the time, /v/ is just /b/ with video games.  20% of the time, /v/ is just /b/.  Once upon a time, people came here to avoid that.  But these days /games/ is just as bad.  (Just look at the first page threads vs. the old threads that are still accessible.)
