Avoid Bioshock like the plague

Name: Anonymous 2007-08-26 15:27 ID:4/hdSqp3

BIOSHOCK IS ONE of the most awaited games in recent memory, and was going to be my first buy since Supreme Commander. I downloaded the 1.84GB demo, and was going to install it when I found out all the problems. I would recommend that you avoid this game like the plague.

The problems stem from SecuROM, a DRM infection of unconscionable proportions, brought to you by the good people of Sony, again. 2KGames took the anti-user step of hurting paying customers with this malware in order to prevent piracy, but if you don't want to end up with a system filled with unremovable malformed registry keys and an uninstallable coaster, your only recourse is to pirate it.

What SecuROM does is phone home and activate, the same way MS malware in WGA and Vista does. If you install the game twice, it will keep you from installing a third time. As of this writing, some are calling it a bug, others are saying that the limit has been raised to 5 times, but there is no official word from 2K Games either on their web site or on their forums.

If the whole screwing of the consumer in this was wasn't evil enough, they managed to lower the standard yet again. SecuROM will hose you if you run AVG antivirus like I do, or you happen to have the audacity to run MS's own Process Explorer. If you read the links and the comments, you will see that both SecuROM and 2K have mastered the art of pass the buck, each blaming the other while not solving the problem. The 2K Games Bioshock forums are littered with complaints, far more than I have ever seen on a single game. It is a mess.

On the up side, the early calls of 'rootkit' are false, what you have instead is something that phones home to take away your rights, limits how you use your purchase, and in general, screws you. All this for only $49.99.

I was so looking forward to his game, it's spiritual successors were simply a blast to play, and this one looked really good. DRM infections chalk up another defeat snatched from the jaws of victory, and we pay the price. 2K had another winner, but with SecuROM screwing users, take a pass, a wide pass, on Bioshock.

Not OP here

Even if Bioshock were free, it would be a waste of time. It's like you're playing a piece of art, and all of a sudden you realize you have these shitty weapons/hands of magical plasmidcock in front of you. All of a sudden it hits you: shit man, the guys who created the beautiful environment and did the art direction for this game got screwed by a complete different team who did the gameplay mechanics! What a travesty!

Bioshock rocks.

SecuROM doesn't.

Wait for the release that does not contain SecuROM or lower yourself to the 360 version.

Wow Sony, just wow.

you're an idiot. yes, SecuROM reports back on the number of times you've installed something, and freezes it if you install more than twice, but it's not the end of the world like you make it to be.

It will only count the second install against you if you somehow deleted the game without going through the full uninstall process. it basically assumes that if it sees a new install after not receiving an uninstall notice, that a) something fucked up in sending the uninstall notice, and you did uninstall properly and are installing it again, or b) you left the existing game installed on one computer, and are installing it again on another (pirating). the second install is the mistake buffer, and by the third time you install improperly, it raises a red flag and shuts off your key.

ah, but this is not the end of the world. if in fact you are not using one copy on multiple computers, you simply call sony or SecuROM or w/e, and get them to cancel the previous keys and give you a new one, letting you start fresh. they've even gone so far as to recently give you FIVE tries until it freezes your account.

really, the only people who will be seriously effected by this are either pirates or very unlucky people.

and i just ran AVG and nothing bad happened.
