TAKE THIS WITH A GRAIN OF SALT. If it turns out to be false, DON'T get upset. I AM not making this up. I am just passing along this rumor from someone I know who has been very reliable in the past.
I have a friend(more of an aqquaintance-- I met him through another friend at a convention) who has been a very reliable source of gaming info over the last couple years. 85% of the stuff he tells us ends up being true.
Here's some stuff he told me in the past that ended up being true before it became common/public knowledge:
-He knew a Blaster Master game was headed to PSOne.
-He knew Shinobi was headed to PS2.
-He knew GCN was gonna get a Skies of Arcadia port.
-He knew a Castlevania game was in the works for DS.
-He knew River City Ransom and Double Dragon were headed to Gameboy Advance.
-He knew Metal Slug was coming to Wii.
I only communicate with him about five times each month through e-mail and his myspace page. The only time I talk to him face-to-face is if he's hanging out with my friend and they invite me to come along. Other than that, his job has his traveling between the states and overseas a lot. Though, whenever we talk, it's always about gaming.
ANYWAY, I met up with him this afternoon and he dropped an absolute bombshell of a rumor on me: According to him, Nintendo is letting Square-Enix handle the development of Punch-Out Wii! AAAANNNNNDD... on top of that, Akira Toriyama will be helping with character design!
When I asked him if he knew any else about the project, he said the only thing else he heard was that the project was still in planning stages and they are thinking of working RPG elements into the game where your character could build up stats.
If this turns out to be true... I mean, holy shit! Just think about it! Cel-shaded(most likely) DBZ-styled next-gen PunchOut with Wii controls and RPG elements! It would be the game to end all games!
