We don't know. It could just be that he quit posting to protect his interests during the whole adoption process. We aren't exactly shining interweb-gestalt-for-a-godparent material in most peoples eyes.
On a semirelated note, my mother is a paramedic and she had to take in a little girl of around 9 who had a similar thing happen--her mom and dad died, and she lost her left leg and her right leg from the knee down. :(
