PS2 game won't load

One of the games I'm playing would play just fine, bought it new and played it for a few hours every day for the past week.  This morning the game freezes.  Hit reset, reload, freezes near the same spot again.  Reset the power again, Disc Read Error.

Out of the last 30 attempts to get the mother fucker to play the game it loaded once, and then froze when it tried to load a new map.

There is a slight scuff mark on the disc that I haven't been able to rub off, though it's not a scratch.  All other games load and play just fine.

Is the disc repairable, did my PS2 cause this or was it just a bad disc to begin with?

jizz onto the CD and take a towel and rub it into the disc, this will put a glossy finish over that scuff mark and make the CD like brand new again (trust me it works)

Take it to the local video store, they might have a CD repairer (sp?).  If not, make sure you got your receipt.
