Counter-Strike, for FREE?!

Ok, so I'm downloading CS right now, and I've heard loads of bullshit about steam and all that Valve faggotry.
Basically, is playing CS online with a downloaded version hard? If I have to piss about with Steam a little bit, that's ok, but too much and it's just not worth the effort. Fucking capitalists.
