Japanese are superior! US should have allied with them and kicked Chink & Soviet butt together until there be non left. Also with coupled effort of best US and Japanese scientist we could have developed all manner of nuclear and biological weapons before anyone else. If you mean free as in no monthly fees, I'd recommend Guild Wars. If you mean free as in no monthly fees AND no cost to the get the game, there's really not much out there...I can think of Fly For Fun offhand, but that's a rather simplistic game as far as MMOs go and gets boring fast (that and you have to use real money to pay for the really good items).

You might want to try Voyage Century Online. It's a seafaring game, where you can choose to be a pirate, merchant, crafter, etc. It can be fun, but expect a lot of grind.
