No other virtual world will ever have as much player created history as Ultima Online.

UNLESS mmorpgs decide to stop sucking ass

I'm not refering to faggy RP lore player created history

I'm refering to pissing people off with minimal effort while using a newbie character because the game was flexible enough to make it possible, history.

Griefing, scamming, exploits, and "cheating" were all part of the game.

It's still fun to read old stories about UO

like these two players who broke into some guys house, and used axes on all his furniture to break it

(using is not the same as attacking, to "use" something you usually have to double click on the item and move the circle cursor onto what you want to use it on)

And generally trashed the place dumping junk all over. (you could physically drop items on the ground that would obstruct movement and cause lag, and the items would stay there for hours)

And afterward they lured a grizzly bear inside to make it look like the bear was responsible. (bears can't trash places like that IIRC)

Remember that legendary scene of Lord British getting killed in his own game in Beta?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:UO_LB_assasination.jpg

Did you know that could have been done by a newly made character so long as the character had stealing as one of their starting skills?

How much do mmorpgs these days let you do with a newbie character?

Fuck EA and fuck whining carebears for turning UO into shit.

Everquest, Attack of the Clones.

AO, SWG, DAOC, AC2, WoW. Clones. Every. Single. One. Of. Them. The question begs to be asked, Why? The answer of course is confusion over what made EQ successful, and the drive to duplicate it. Why else would Turbine, with a successful first generation MMORPG of their own in AC1, which was developed concurrently with Everquest try to replicate EQ with their sequel. These developers and publishers saw the success of EQ and set forth to copy and improve on it, or just slightly change it up. Daoc went for the EQ meets zergy pvp angle. AO went with the EQ meets future angle. SWG went with the EQ meets Starwars angle (How this didn’t make a gazillion dollars I don’t know, wait did George Lucas design it?) so on and so forth. Developers didn’t look at why EQ was so successful, they just saw that it was successful and copied its mechanics. The thought that EQ was successful because the PvE population of UO was in open revolt never crossed their collective minds I’d wager. There is less complexity in EQ and its clones, less immersion, less innovation. How is it possible, that a 2d game converted to 3d, Asherons Call, is the only major mmorpg to date to actually have REAL line of sight, and REAL projectiles for magic and missles? Finally we have the culmination of EQ in WoW, at least I hope so. WoW is everything EQ wished it could be, minus any sort of skill requirement. Im not saying EQ required a lot of skill, but WoW is dumbed down to the point that you could pass out on your keyboard, drool all over it, and wake up level 60 in full epic gear.

The Origin of the One Bob
From BobWiki
Jump to: navigation, search

Lo, in the time between Sosaria and Britainnia, when the sweet innocence of Homoerotic Elves and actual intercourse came to an end, there was a rock. A Black Rock. Many proclaimed it a sign of the end. Others saw it as a Asteroid. It was neither, for traveling through the Eternal Cosmos there came...an egg. A pink egg before it was burned to the blackest night by the nasty thing called the atmosphere.

An egg of Holy Divination. An egg of long foretelling. An egg Lord British feared. For inside that egg lied the Perfect Being. Inside was the One Bob, the First Bob. A man whose body was not contaminated by hair, a sign of primative beasts. A man whose sense of fashion demasculated any and all who beheld them, as well as instilling fearful feelings of lust. Bob had come to Britainnia.

The egg came down, rendered the land anew, and was promptly forgotten. Woe be it for the world to forget such as He, for His decendants would make the world pay.
