Stop mispronouncing the Genesis as Mega Drive.

Maybe if you lived in Gods country you would have had systems with correct names and a wider library selection of the vidya games.

Everytime someone would mention Mega Drive I would always mistake what they were talking about for some vehicle part.

Maybe if you smelly unwashed toothless half breeds stopped using L's for your money sign you'd learn a thing or two about our language, the english language.

Comment of "boom-bam-obvious" just reminded me: BOX ART!

Yep, I'm sure most of us know that JP Box Art > US (and most PAL) Box Art

The lack of subtlety and the shallowness of american gamers is obvious in these examples:

1. Look at front cover art of Japanese Final Fantasy IX *FFIX logo on white background*

2. Look at front cover art of European Final Fantasy IX *FFIX logo on white background again*

3. Look at front cover art of American Final Fantasy IX *ugly jumbled mish-mash of FFIX logo, characters and a background*

lol, they can't fit every character art on the front cover.

Another example:

1. Front cover art of Japanese Chrono Cross *Image of a mysterious floating island-thing hovering above the ocean; Serge and Kid on a boat are comparitively tiny on the bottom right; emphasis on the colour blue; Chrono Cross logo in the middle*

2. Front cover art of Europ... oh wait, not released in Europe hahaha.

3. Front cover art of American Chrono Cross *Big pictures of Serge, Kid, and Lynx...hmm okay yep.*

Looking from an American localisers point of view, it might make sense.

Would an American gamer even stop and consider buying Chrono Cross if it was using the JAP cover art? No, their eyes will simply look over it.

But if it uses the US cover art?

Young Boy: "Wow they guy looks cool and he's holding a big weapon I WANT THAT GAME MOMMY!"

Average Joe: "That chick looks HOT. I WILL BUY THAT GAME!"

Furry: ;)

So basically, Americans identify with PEOPLE better, not objects or anything subtle. After the necessary modifications, this increases your chances of people talking a look at your game and making a sale. amirite to think this way?

Oh well, Japan = Still Superior.

o hi me again

Well this is interesting (from /v/):

http://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php/topic,1299.new

If Capcom US couldn't even properly translate a little game like Rockman 7, imagine all the liberties the localisers take when translating ANY RPGs.

I guess an English translation that retains the original meaning of the Japanese script is too much to ask for. *looks at Working Designs*

As you probably know by now, I take an interest in these things. Well I hope I provided some good topics for discussion (since this is /dis/)

PS: If you are wondering whether the title of the game you're playing is in fact, the true title, go to GameFAQs.com, type in the name in the search engine, and click on "Game Info". It provides all the names of games for JAP, US, and PAL regions, including any rereleases.

Japanese games usually get a second release with more features, and sometimes give it to Europe.  The US seems gets these updated games a lot less.

Sometimes Japan will change titles and character names.  Sometimes violence and nudity is edited. In God of War the Oracle of Athens nudity is censored.  Resident Evil 4 has no headshot decapitations.

And US games can have different box art:

Eurogamers mostly only want to play football (Soccer) games anyway. That's why Pro Evolution Soccer (Winning Eleven) sells like crack over here.

I did a survey of my school year and around 90% of them said they owned one-two games for their console(Mostly PS2'rs). 95% of those 1-2 game people owned Pro Evolution Soccer as one of the games. The others were ones like Gran Turismo or a Final Fantasy or Tekken.

As >>49 says. All the chavs buy it. Especially in the UK.
