Japanese are good in making good RPGs

Name: Anonymous 2006-04-27 12:16

Final Fantasy series
Shining series
Dragon Quest series

Are the Japanese really creative or the Americans are just lack the skills in a good RPG plot?

Those games are crap!

Most of the things from those games listed were only good for their time. I played final fantasy 1 back in the day and it was fun then.

Japanese are usually only good at making characters that you don't forget and sometimes fun battle systems (twitch or tactical strategy).

The concept of classes, levels, turn-based combat, and experience per kill is rather restricting to be honest.

Agreed. In those series you can't really control your character's advancement like you can in The Summoner or The Elder Scrolls.

And Final Fantasy really blows, specifically 7 and up.

On the other hand, it's hard for nonlinear PC games to have dramatic plot and character development with so much nonlinear freedom, NPC death, character customability, etc.  Bioware does a good job, but your main character still isn't defined much except for being the The Hero or The Guy Who Thought He Was The Hero.

That's quite intended, so the player can identify with the hero.

To avoid contributing to the butthurt I should keep my mouth shut, but...

I have never enjoyed Japenese or Console RPGs are much as Western RPGs. Games like Baldur's Gate are the highest point of RPGs. You have complex characters (much more complex than JapRPGs), customization, and I think it has a more mature story/art style.

nope

Americans are good at first person games (and not just crap like COD or Halo, better stuff like Deus Ex, Metroid Prime and BioShock).

Oh, and portal.

You guys should try the Magna Carta series, preferably with Magna Carta 2 for the 360.

Awesome art, awesome story, awesome combat system = awesome game

If you want a deep, balanced, cool RPG then Japanese ones are for you.

If you want an "in-your-face", casual, badly balanced, RPG with bad graphics then American ones are for you.

Both regions have good RPGs. Stop contributing to the growing xenophobia of 4chan and learn to enjoy more things. You'll be much happier that way.
