Console jrpgs have so little appeal to them, it's difficult to find many redeeming qualities. Being 3D for the sake of 3D is so 1996. When will japan stop messing around and get serious again?

Because its all about special effects and cool poses and flashiness when performing regular attacks or spells and thirty minute FMV cutscenes and four-dimensional hairstyles that could not exist otherwise.
It used to be alot different. All the 3D and/or special effects were saved for specific actions or scenes (magic spells and skills). They were fast-paced and flashly, got the job done and looked good while doing it. And you didn't see them too often either, but when you did, it was like "Wow!".
Suikoden 2 is a good example of this.

Xenogears was a mostly 2D game, but it used 3D well IMO.

I wish I can complain about today's 3D RPG's, but I just had flashbacks of the 'pre-rendered 3D background' era, famously utilized in FF7,8,9 and a buttload of others on PS1...

Yeah I tried Xenosaga Ep. 1 and it just wasn't the same as when I played through Xenogears. I kept falling asleep while playing Xenogears, but I loved it.

This is the main reason why xenogears is one the single greatest rpgs of all time, but with ff7 fanboys it turns into "lololol teh graphics are soooo bad", good I sure hope they do not enjoy the game itself it only helpe to make people who don't know what the fuck games are ever so more easily identifiable. I wish more games used that system of field and character display, I believe La Pucelle and the Persona(which is actually megami tensei? some spinoff?) series do in fact use it, unfortunately I haven't played those yet, believe me I have been meaning to though.
I've never played Xenogears, could someone explain how it used 3D?

It shows a 2d sprite that has 8 different angles for each frame, that way when the camera moves, it changes the sprite to display the correct angle. Just a nice way of keeping 2d in a 3d moving environment.

also, no matter where you were in the game you could use L1 and R1 to rotate the camera so that you could see whatever you needed to see. there were maybe a few places where that was turned off, it's been a long time since i played the game but i remember that for the majority of the time if something was hard to see you could very easily just rotate the camera angle with the shoulder buttons and see what you wanted to see.
