Why don't we get Special Edition boxes?

Japan gets a huge amount of Limited Edition or Special Edition games repackaged.  This is a great way to put out more copies of a game, preventing "rare RPG on Ebay" syndrome.  The US has released "greatest hits at cheap prices," but these are often very selective titles from a couple companies, rather than something for fans.

Notable special editions include the Ps1 era squaresoft titles (FF7, PE, XG, etc), ZOE, Xenosaga, FF1+2, etc.

The US gets, um... Halo 2.

The obvious response is lack of demand,  a limited special edition is by definition limited in supply, and demanding to fans who want to collect a game or own extras.  It provides additional copies that are available, but still limited.  As opposed to buying a price gouged version of the regular copy online because an initial low production.

But then I'd have to pay for a Working Designs full-script-rewrite localization. That was acceptable and all ten years ago, when nobody was translating this stuff, but now? I'd rather have Atlus bring over a game, even without the $30 extras package that WD puts in.

Also, don't risk buying from Toys N' Joys, their service is very hit-or-miss, from what I hear.
