Why don't we get Special Edition boxes?

Japan gets a huge amount of Limited Edition or Special Edition games repackaged.  This is a great way to put out more copies of a game, preventing "rare RPG on Ebay" syndrome.  The US has released "greatest hits at cheap prices," but these are often very selective titles from a couple companies, rather than something for fans.

Notable special editions include the Ps1 era squaresoft titles (FF7, PE, XG, etc), ZOE, Xenosaga, FF1+2, etc.

The US gets, um... Halo 2.

The obvious response is lack of demand,  a limited special edition is by definition limited in supply, and demanding to fans who want to collect a game or own extras.  It provides additional copies that are available, but still limited.  As opposed to buying a price gouged version of the regular copy online because an initial low production.

We are starting to.

Or have you forgotten about Halo 2,Mortal Kombat,Madden,Doom 3. Plus we are starting to get better pre-order goodies rather than a shitty mini poster,or a white shirt that anyone could make.

Granted I think it was PSM or EGM that said it was just publishers seeing if we'd pay $50+ for a game.
