ragnarok online

I've been meaning to get into the Ragnarok Online thing for a while but I'm a little confused because of the tons of private servers - can anyone give me some ideas as to where I start (i.e. what to download, what evil illegal patches to get, etc.) and what to play on.
I'd like to be on a pretty large server so I'll be able to make friends and such (yay! internet friends!) without having the 1000000x item drops I hear about so often.
pointers? please? I've got the time to play. I think.

One thing I find annoying is that a lot of designers (and players) consider a treadmill "challenging".

It's not. It's fucking boring.

I've played RO a fair bit, and I still sometimes play it, but I have no illusions about the quality. Gravity made a complete mess of the gameplay. RO is pure treadmill, and there is little incentive to go out except to chase the next level-up. Unfortunately, the gameplay mechanics are sufficiently dull and inflexible that there isn't anything else to do, except perhaps trading.

Oh, I can feel the excitement there...

Either you're too bored to break your ass to level up for the nth time in 2 weeks, or you're on a private servers and the rates present 0 challenge. In either case you will be sitting in a popular town chatting with your friends and watching the drama unfold. I love RO for the novelty, but as others have said, it has no depth.

It would help if RO didn't have such a ridiculously short text limit. Even in chatting I bump up against it all the time, let alone anything more involved. It doesn't even include anything like "/me".

It's as if Gravity intentionally broke everything to ensure RO is useless for anything.

So, anyone know site to download from that can beat 10 kb/s? Downloading more than half a gig at that rate is seizure inducing... need more speed....

I got it off a torrent. Is that where you're getting it too?

screw bapho, a MVP is only as hard as his mob and baphomet jr aren't exactly a challenge.  I've taken down bapho with a FS and a Clown, try doing that with incantation samurai who summons 7 tengu every few seconds.

Avoid the gamer sites. I tried downloading from there because it was faster, and got screwed over because they didn't bother to update to the new client. Just start the download before you go to bed.

RO is not fun. Avoid. I didn't even get addicted to it. I tried all sorts of servers. Fanbase is nice for the most part, rule-abiding and what-not. They don't talk, though. Nobody talks. Boring.

Whats the diff 'tween 1228 and 0329? Should I get them both cuz the free one I play on is using just 1228.

0329 is the current version (last I checked).  1228 is from... well, December 28th.

Ofcourse you can go on a server running an older version if you have the newest client.

That is, as long as the server isn't refusing connections from clients using a different protocol. But you wont know untill you try.

Try The KKRO server i am using it now and i love it there are 2 servers to pic from asgard and niflheim (the names are only ment to be opposites)one is a standard rate server the other is a high rate server. the GMs are kookiekrak,kitty,and 2 others. They all enjoy summoning random monsters in the starting area of prontera. Also since we use the korean version we are ahead of the english. we already have the taikwondo class. Also they enjoy wirinting codes so that things are a little easier.such as monster feading, and monster taming.

This game blows, period...

The graphics suck (and yes, I am an anime fan =P), the quests suck unless you're will to spend countless hours for a stupid headgear and it's to pvp and gvg oriented, unlike Guild Wars.

RO has quests? When did this happen. I've played since alpha and I have never seen a quest in this game.

And no, the stupid get item for this headgear is not a quest.

I play on DevilishRO. It's an med-high rate server with WoE and lots of awesome events.

Private servers aims to let players experience things that you dont normally do in Official servers. i really compromises the basic concept of Level up�

Anyway...according to my point of view this servers do not possess license and GMs that are running these servers are just crazy-ass motherfuckers who wanna experience banning us honest players and shit and creating their own fucked up,impossible to make items which even us players would wonder of how other players get to hold to those shit..

Thats because some GMs are power abusive and tend use their GMnastical powers in creating items,banning people,broadcasting useless shit and pretending to be Goddamn celebrities in an attempt of acquiring respect and as the homies say it "Lovin" from us players..

Look it aint bad to play this server and well know this shit is Illegal but that doesnt make it evil(-_-)

the reason you people wrote this shit is because you experienced on playing this games and by that process and possibly enjoyed the game and probably some of you fucked up motherfuckers are banned or outcasted in some servers and are taking out your anger in this forum....

10 Commandments in playing P. Servers(I created)

1.)Try to be friendly..especially in PK servers
2.)dont be an asshole and kill noobs cause thats where the shit starts.
3.)dont do any weak ass schemes like modifying the system settings.
4.)Make friends and have fun cause thats why its created.
5.)When talking to a GM..dont try to act cool and smarty in the hope of getting close to the GM and possibly thinking that the GM will consider in converting your account into a GM account.
6.)Always withdraw your anger when someone pisses you off cause all P.Servers..this shit is normal and that what makes it interesting...The competition
7.)Know your caliber and P. Servers are supposed to let you test your builds or make friend and by saying "know your caliber" means know you place..when someone stronger..dont go around cursing cause your doing nothing but compounding your problems.
8.)Always make suggestions and comments when meeting a GM even if its confidential shit or offensive remarks about the server because your a player and by that have a right to complain not because your not paying for the server's maintenance but you have the right to complain because without the complaint of players, the server isnt gonna grow because not all GM's know the drawbacks and mistakes that they might have made in their server
9.)Always make sure you create a character that you seriously give attention because you dont want to go around creating all players cause their all good looking and you think they inflict monstrous damage when used.
10.)Have fun, dont be a loser,dont let the GM or players disrespect you,be strong,say no to racist,kick their ass in PVP,reign supreme in WoE.
