I've been meaning to get into the Ragnarok Online thing for a while but I'm a little confused because of the tons of private servers - can anyone give me some ideas as to where I start (i.e. what to download, what evil illegal patches to get, etc.) and what to play on.
I'd like to be on a pretty large server so I'll be able to make friends and such (yay! internet friends!) without having the 1000000x item drops I hear about so often.
pointers? please? I've got the time to play. I think.

Use google, there's a top 200 list or whatever. Check for the rates you want. No more than 20x is really needed, but anything under 5x is brain damaging. :P

If you want to get the real feeling of playing the game start on the official servers. I played the game for over 3 years(alpha, beta, and everything that came after) and private servers suck in so many ways in comparison. Even the best p.servers aren't fun for very long but they make a nice distraction if can't get on the real deal.

Official servers suck. Why? Because 0.01% drops take away all possible pleasure from the game. One rare per 10 000 monsters means a LONG time to play to get your basic cards which are essential for a good char (and easy, FUN leveling).
The problem with private servers is that they have one or more of the following problems;
1. eAthana based, meaning an emulator is running it. It's pretty good by now, but still not the real thing. Aegis is a stolen software from Gravity, the real thing. Problem is, it's outdated since nobody has stolen new zones in ages. Outdated Aegis makes many go for Athena since it gets updates.
2. Have insanely high exp/drops. Just forget all servers with more than 20x exp rates, except for testing purposes. However, item drops at 20x is still 0.2% rare drops, 500 kills per rare on average. I'd personally prefer 3x exp, 3x job, 50x items. That means you'll have good time leveling, actually seeing the exp gauge fill up up to level 80 or so. Also, a rare per 200 kills is nice. It doesn't get tedicious to collect your basic gear. For example Mages, 4s Rod, 4x Fabre/Andre Larva, 1s Jacket, Pupa/Roda Card is very basic and would take 1400 monster kills which you can do while leveling normally. Compare to 70 000 kills on stuff that give no exp on official servers and cry.
3. Have too low population. The less population, the less chances of finding parties (and these so called internet-friends). Also, it means you can't buy what you want since people don't have extra stuff. That's the one thing good on official servers - with thousands of players, EVERYTHING is for sale. For a price. Which you can't get without finding one GOOD 0.01% drop, have fun with that.
In summary: You can use high rate private server to learn the game. Move to lower exp servers after that, they have much better communities since getting to high level (not to mention max) actually takes time. Try to find one that has higher item drops though, so that you won't despair getting even basic gear (not to mention higher end gear).

My God, it's Slashley! Hah, the bRO forums got pretty boring after they banned you (well, it was going down the toilet already anyway). A lot of people are jumping ship. Even ekvin ran away...
Where'd you go to next?
On topic: it really helps if you fall in with a skilled guild at the beginning. This can be quite hard to do unless you already have friends elsewhere. Otherwise you'll probably want to party as much as possible.
As for the software, most people download the official game from Gravity, grab sakray, then get a hexed exe. A lot of the larger servers will already have prepared game downloads though, so it shouldn't be necessary to do it manually unless you want to play on several different servers.

I didn't go anywhere after that. I intented to go to gRO with Ching, but 2x/2x/3x rates make me cry. I spent an entire day looking for the forementioned equip and didn't find one rare. Har har, no thanks. I don't have the time to spend a week just for preparation for leveling. Leveling is fun to some content... but only with gear. I told Ching I'd play if he'll get me the gear, and he was like, "no" :}
So for now, no server for me. A break will do me good. I'm sure once my head has rested it'll start coming up with new builds to try out constantly, then I'll have to pick some server to test the builds out.
I still read bRO forums, hell, you can probably guess who I am in there. It's not like the current GMs even know their playerbase so they apparently haven't spotted me ban evading. snicker
And these people claim they'll make a whole new RO experience? Right. Sure they will. I'll check it out once they're done (late Jan? Fat chance!) and pass final judgement to it then.

Liralen really fucked up there. I know that I at least have no motivation to work on my builds because of the wipe, but we both know that it's not going to happen in January (especially when the only productive GM runs away). I'm probably not the only one who thinks like this, ergo, an even deader server. --

I've playde the game until the first closed (and no more free of charge) "beta" came out. WTF I was supposed to pay for an incomplete game? Well, it has been nice to a point, espacially the possibility of chatting peeps anytime caused a particiular insomnia, but RO failed at motivating me for a longer time.
Name:
Slashley2004-12-27 13:10
RO beta sucked. I remember there weren't even cards back then, not to mention second classes. Essential parts of the game now.
As for "pay for beta", hell, even Blizzard does that. At least here. I didn't pay for RO beta back then, I sure as hell won't pay for WoW beta now.

Pfft, all mmorpg's are pay for beta. They all want to release their games quickly to earn money and hang in the competition with the other gaming companies, and the players are the ones to suffer, except for those that finds the sweet hacks and abuses.
Anyways, RO was fun for some time but really it does get too linear after you go up in levels. I mean killing the toughest boss in any mmorpg with a group of 2 - 3 players is just sad, very sad.
Name:
Slashley2004-12-30 3:37
I wish you luck in killing the bosses with 2-3 players now, the bosses got insane beefs.
I personally liked the old bosses. Bosses like in L2 are only for the most hardcore players with good guilds... I don't have the time for that shit.

Xahool2004-12-30 17:42
I saw two people kill the amatsu boss before i quit, that sammurai guy. one FS and one archer.
As long as you have one FS, someone to clean up the minions and someone to whack away at the boss while the FS gives him barrier and stuff is pretty much all you need.
Name:
Slashley2004-12-31 3:07
Even after the update? From what I've heard, the bosses now do skills which kill FS regardless of what level, gear and buffs he has (they have puny HP when compared to Knights and Crusaders). That's the way I think it should be, but I was hoping they would've nerfed FS some other way... oh well.
Name:

Amatsu wasn't the last MVP buff, and the samurai MVP is the most pathetic MVP ever. Try real MVP's, like Baphomet.

oooh, hey Slashly and dmp!
i'm SO not playing after bRO wipes, but i heard ching, botzu and the rest of the fellas at Silent Illusion are trying ROSE online atm.
iRO/kRO is extremely boring to me. I hate fighting the same monster for hours on end and earn .02% EXP but that's just me :P I like private servers mucho better.

SonicRO is a good private server with rates that are not too high, but not too low either. theres nearly 200 people on it too. Give that one a try.

why would you want to play on a server that might go out of business anytime. p.servers not licensed by gravity is illegal and will be sued. get ready to lose all your stuff please.
and if you are on the pservers just for a quick ride to99, then why not run your own server? whats the point you play for 2 days you are 99 and what you going to do?

Some private servers have been around for many months, even years.
One reason for playing on them is for the modified rates. Some people go nuts and make the rates too high, but the rates on iRO are a joke. Some of us do have lives, you know? What happens if you want to make a high priest or similar class? On iRO, anyone who reaches lvl90 with a normal class is probably some loser living in their parent's basement.
Not that pservs are perfect. Most of them are poor, and the populations are vastly smaller even on the good ones.

You're an over-moralistic jizzmop. While you do make some good points (you get to 99 in two days, what then?), it's all overshadowed by your preaching about ethics and principles. OMG YOU GUYS THOSE SERVERS ARE ILLEGAL! THEY WILL GET SUED! ALSO, I NEVER DOWNLOAD STUFF OFF OF BITTORRENT, NOT MUSIC OR MOVIES, CUZ THAT IS ILLEGAL AND UNETHICAL, YOU ARE GOING TO STrAIGHT TO HELL.
Yeah, okay buckaroo.

actually it really depends what kind of server is being run, eAthena is a privately developed emulator, and is perfectly legal as far as I've ever seen, and besides that there's waay too many servers out there for Gravity to do anything about. If you want a good private server (that's been around for years) try Pillows. http://pillows.dk/ragnarok/ this page will get you up and running with all the downloads and patches, and the server is run by good people with a lot of players on at one time.

eA is on very thin ice legally. Not that anyone here gives a shit, but don't pretend it's something it isn't.

eathena sucks, use japan athena!
Name:
Anonymous2005-02-19 23:30
There's nothing wrong with eAthena, but it does not help that the devs seem to be a pack of idiots. Their concern isn't so much stability as it is featuritis. What's the point of a fancy server if it crashes?
I've spoken to some of them, and I wasn't impressed. Me and a friend have considered helping them stabilize it, but with the attitude they have there would only be a clash of personalities. There's no point fixing something that'll only be broken because some kid thinks some silly feature that nobody will ever use is "kewl".
Name:
Anonymous2005-02-21 12:43
thats why jathena is better cuz it never crash
Name:
Makie Sasaki !fGbu3cxYQU2005-03-24 14:38
I'm personally for Fusion, however jAthena is pretty damn good too.
As for private servers, I prefer a low rate to keep it fun, and I use a high rate server to test out stat/skill builds.
There was a server I found once called BrightRO...their rates were so ungodly high that your base level went from 1 to 47 after whacking a poring. Needless to say I wasn't on that server for much longer.

It crashes more than win95.
If you play on a server with a multiplier higher than two and consider the game a challenge, you need to go back to runescape or diablo II, or whichever other hellish reality you came from.
