Me: Final Fantasy XI - very indepth, feels like it has it's own world. When you do something you get a feeling of accomplishment.

I have no favorite, but I always seem to return to Ragnarok Online, regardless how many times "I quit". Maybe it's because it's fast-paced and not too tedious than the rest of the MMORPG's.
2D sprites on a 3D enviroment and easy game mechanics. I'd recommend it to people that won't invest a lot of time on online games.

I only have played one so far and that would be FFXl, and to say the least it was fun for the first few months, then it just became a addiction.
But I'm planning to get WoW soon.

My days on free Ultima Online shards were wonderful. Absolutely wonderful. Some of my favourite online memories.
My final shard was Nemesis. Before that I played on whatever shard most people on Nemesis migrated over from.. I feel terrible that I can no longer recall the name of it.
I always loved UO because it was extremely simple. The graphics appealed greatly to me and there was just so much you could do in the game. I loved the community feel to it as well.
I never was a really into PKing, hunting, etc. I just had fun gaining skills, making things, discovering ways to become rich, etc. Very very simple pleasures.

I enjoyed WoW immensely in the beta, and having let them try to get the servers under control more or less for a month I'm going to buy it in January.
I liked the history and lands of Warcraft, so to be able to visit them and see places like Dalaran or the Plaguelands or Ashenvale all up close was incredibly cool to me.

Getting WoW very soon since I was pleased with the gameplay during the open Beta. The best part about it is the PvP servers that let you raid the Horde or the Alliance. Nothing's better than slaughtering level 10-20 newbies when you have 40 people that are 40+. :D

World of Warcraft. They need some damn PvP RP servers though. I also liked Dark Ages.. no, not of Camelot.

I was just wondering, FFXI got pretty boring after a while, due to the continuous level grind of fighting monsters over and over again...is WoW any different? I'd like to give it a try when it's released over here.

WoW.. Well of course you have to grind, but not much. There's tons of quests so you get rewards for what you kill, and the leveling pace is nice... a million times better than EQ or Ragnarok. You can get a good taste of every class fairly quickly since the pace is really fast up to about 20's or 30's. Groups aren't as required as they are in some MMORPGS, and all classes can solo.. though some can better than others. Of course you need a group for elite quests and instances, but that's later on once you're already addicted!

I really found it difficult to do the continously levelling thing after getting to level 10, it all just felt 'bland' after that...the thing is, other people who play FFXI tend to find so much more enjoyment out of it, while I can't seem to grasp the positive bits.

The more I hear about WoW the more I want to buy it. What's the stat-system like? I played RO for quite a while and in later levels it punished you mercilessly for having a crappy build. Does the same apply to WoW or can you afford to make a few screw-ups?
Name:
Anonymous2004-12-24 17:27
there is no stat distribution in WoW, it's all automatic, all racial characters have near equal growths by the end game: WoW is heavily equipment dependant.
also, it is entirely possible to do quests til the max level, grinding isn't neccessary at all unless you want to just level faster (which is kinda boring if you choose to).
you can't really screw up anywhere either, crafting is always successful and quests are all redo-able if you fail.
some people complain WoW is too easy, imo, you can make the game harder for yourself if you want, but not the other way around (ie: ffxi's un-soloability, ro's god-forsaken weapon forging/upgrading rate)

You get talent points in World of Warcraft. You can reset them for a price if you've screwed up. An in-game price. It starts out pretty low, so you can experiment up until your final levels and then reset and make a dream build.

It would definitely have to be World of Warcraft for me, as well. A few months ago, I would probably say Ragnarok Online...The game got incredibly old after you hit the max level, 99...Even when you hit the max level(60) in WoW, there's still a lot to do...If you're not a carebear and play on a PVP server(like everyone should!), there's plenty of people to go around and slaughter, which is enough to keep me happy!
I've never level grinded in WoW unless I was incredibly close to a level and I had -no- quests that I could do until the next level. Instances don't count...You get so much exp from going on and completing quests that it takes away the FFXI and RO-esque "kill a bunch of one monster, level up, rinse, repeat"
Name:
Anonymous2004-12-24 18:30
Thank god, you get exp for doing quests? Why the heck didn't FFXI implement this? Or am I missing something?

FFXI's the only one I'll ever really bother to play, not being a fan of the whole Tolkien-esque Dungeons and Dragons ilk. It used to be one of my favorite games to play in general, but it has this one little glaring flaw that comes with having other people interact: Stupid amounts of drama which cause everyone to freak out and emigrate.

Although I am looking forward to starting World of Warcraft soon, as soon as i get DSL. There is one MMORPG that always stuck to me, its like a yerning that wont go away, it says "Hey, *harbl*, come play with me, i promise you'll get really far and 'godly' this time, we'll find lots of items together, and MF a couple of times, Let's do a sorceres, you know you love them, come on, ill touch your penis.... COME PLAY WITH ME!!!!"

Back on topic though, I loved Asheron`s Call for a long time, mostly for the sheer vastness that was the world, but my favorite, for very similar reasons as >>2 stated is Ragnarok Online, mostly because I have a very short attention span.

I've either played or beta's just about every MMO out there at one point or another. I've dropped about 4 years in EQ, and about 9 months in Final Fantasy XI and City of Heroes each. I'd like to give WoW a try and I desperately want to play EQ2 (in fact, I have the DVD version sitting right here staring at me, but I wont be able to build a new gaming computer till after tax time).
My favorite experience though would be EQ:LDoN. It took EQs fantasy but made you play about 100 times faster. Get a bunch of friends together and spend a weekend doing missions for great fun, great challenges, and even some pretty damn cool rewards.

ive played Asheron call on morningthaw from the second mont it was reatail till the sequel went beta. not to play the sequel though i totaly didnt like it. because they screwed the first at the same time. changing everything, making it easy and all. no game beats the freedom of asheron call or the ever evolving story or the magic system or anything. Darktide was the most intense pking ever, even though i jsut played it as a low lvl noob on a bi-montly basis
diablo 2 ? please do NOT say those 2 words before me. i sold my soul to diablo 2 and even if i stoped playing when the 1.10 patch went live and i lost my 7 account Hardcore Classic, i still think of it. it haunts me. it just wont let me go in peace and will forever torment me to play it again. and i could load it up any second again, i jsut dont know when it will happen and how but, one day i will. the more i say the more it suck me in. hardcore, classic, damn we were hardcore to the bone.

Phantasy Star Online, man. Only been playing it for a couple weeks now, but I'm completely hooked.

WoW has me hooked. They've taken out much of the frustrations that most MMORPGs have. I've only gotten to level 20 so far, but here is a Pro/Con list.
WoW Pros:
- Non-frustrating death system. All you suffer is a non-permanent durability hit to your items, resurrection sickness and a quick run to your body --no loss of exp. You get changed into a ghost form when you die so you don't have to worry about repeatedly dying just TRYING to get to your body.
- Nicely paced. Every level you can practically move to a different area and explore this huge game more. Every two levels you gain access to new spells/skills. Quests gear you to explore and usually don't leave you clueless on what to do.
- The most soloable MMORPG I've played.
- Extremely well polished both in the interface and the game world itself.
- Quests are actually rewarding and you feel like you haven't wasted your time with them. Though straight forward grinding will give you more exp per hour, quests are nice to do when you want a break from the grind.
- Auction system.
WoW Cons:
- So far it's been hard to get groups. I've noticed it's been usually more efficient to fight solo, since many people are idiots. I hear it gets a lot better as you get past the 20s though, and if you have intelligent friends to group with it's a blast.
- Took me like 1 hour to install and patch this game on a 2500+ Barton with 1gig of PC3200 RAM and a 7200RPM 133ATA hard drive.
- A bit of a cartoon-ish atmosphere.

The cartoonish atmopshere is something you like or not.
I dont think it should be on the cons list. Its opinion.

Worst part of Wow? About 80% of players seem to either be nine years old or have double-digit IQ. I guess that's mean to say but it's true. Or maybe they just lack social skills? I don't know. Oh wait, maybe lack of ability to work in a party works into it too. People fucking SUCK at it in that game. In one party, we were in the middle of some camp spawn and after finishing the quest objective, one guy just uses his recall stone and warps back to town, then leaves the party. The other guy dies trying to run and ditch me too, but I ask him if he needs help. "you can clear it out for me" Thanks. I've heard other bad stories too... after finishing their OWN objectives, "brb" (a few minutes pass) "xxx has left the party". Fucking group ninja looters too, looting even before the body hits the ground, with no concept of sharing. I suppose this stuff happens in other games too but it seems to happen way more in WoW (maybe because you can solo so much more easily and it doesn't matter if you screw your group over?)
Having said that, I've met some decent players so it's not so bad I suppose.

The maturity level tends to be higher on the whole in rp servers. But I suspect pvp is more important to most people here than that.
Even so, you run into your fair share of dumbasses. I had one group that was so incredibly greedy and just plain retarded that I almost broke character and left. Err.. yeah.
So, to #31.. always be your group's leader, put it on round robin, and make some friends. People get somewhat less retarded as they get higher in level, and they're willing to sacrifice more since they need other people more.
And if you can give up the pvp aspect, come visit Argent Dawn. That's where I am =D

i dont like when mmorpg gets too easy with you. otherwise you might get all the losers wanabe in your game. and the hard time ive had in Asheron Call accounts for the best time ive had. making parties to get somebodies body(or anything else quest item etc), you make friendship that wont die, you finally get your corpse or a quest beating the odds with skills. most everything nice worth remembering came from hard time. people always helped me and ive always helped others too. Asheron Call was the game with the best people ive ever seen. ill forever miss it, i wish i keept in toutch with the people ive played on Morningthaw. i may try the expension comming out but it will never be what it originaly was. it changed too much.

Ragnarok Online, Phantasy Star Online, Maple Story, and ProgressQuest (har!) have been the most enjoyable for me. Matrix Online gets points for me too for the futuristic/non Tolkien D&D style (I'm in the beta but haven't played since the week I got it, really should try some more). I tried FFXI, but it just got so god-awfully boring, way too slow for me. I'm not really an MMORPG person, I can't sit at my computer for hours straight doing one thing, so if I play with friends from school, I get left in the dust in an instant. I'm looking at Guild Wars though, gonna do the weekend beta event next month, that looks to be a lot more friendly of a solo/casual player game.

Ok I downloaded this game once, and the damn thing played itself... no interactivity at all. What the hell is going on in that game?
Im hooked on WoW. Its amazing in every aspect of gameplay. And Ive grown up with the Warcraft series, so I cream my pants when I see things in "real life" that you only hear about in the older games. PvP is the best thing ever. Even if you're not on a PvP server theres still plenty of horde members to kill, raids happen quite often. I love the pace of leveling up, it doesnt require a bunch of bullshit. Its definitely worth the monthly fee.

Easy enough...World of Warcraft. I played FFXI for a year, and began to realize that there was nothing rewarding whatsoever with advancement in it--it's the same goddamn grind over and over, and if you had one incompetent person in your party, your night was shot.
World of Warcraft is a beautiful thing, truly. I'm on an RP server with like-minded individuals, so I need not deal with 'BNet Kiddies' as they're so termed. Every quest is different, while may seem similar in concept, ever area and every monster is so varied that you have to take a different approach to a task each time. It's just pure, unadulterated fun, and that's really the most one can ask from any game. Blizzard got it right.

Ultima Online is my favorite MMORPG by far, it has managed to set a high bar to meet on gameplay wise but it's heading downhill since AoS.It has the best PVP system... but I think WoW may be able to top it (I don't know yet, I missed out on europe close beta =<)
