Keyboard randomly remapping itself?

recently i've been having a bizarre issue during games, the keys on my keyboard get remapped for no apparent reason. it only seems to happen while playing directx games, and it only presents itself within those games (i.e. if i alt tab back to windows or another non-3d program it works fine), and if i restart a game it again works. no idea where to look for a fix. i've tried google but if i include any variation on 'remap' in the search i just get a thousand results on how to voluntarily remap one's keyboard.
