best gnu/linux distro?

I've been looking around and I've narrowed it down to gentoo, arch-linux, ubuntu, and fedora. Which one do you guys prefer?

basically you should take the one you re familiar with. also choose, after how used you are to unix systems

gentoo is for advanced users which want to configure everything on their own. its hard work but its reliable.

ubuntu is basically the opposite : its doing everything for you. best for beginners - BUT if you CARE ABOUT FLOSS / OPEN SOURCE PLEASE TAKE LINUX MINT DEBIAN EDITION as conancial (the company behind ubuntu) really isnt that well with the open source community (as there were some ...coincidences )

fedora is a good stable linux distribution, which WILL work IF YOU NEED IT :) its for users which are not completely new to unix. dont know much exactly never used it but its good for sure

and arch... i dont like to talk about that there are many fags out there, taking this shit serious. i dont want to get them wrong but arch has a shitty repository, as there is a really bad system for packages + it isnt very reliable, any update can break your system. try it if you want to learn, but for anything else than fun PLEASE dont care about it UNLESS you are really good at solving problems on unix systems

i prefer debian, unstable to be exact. it's good for some learning purpose, but will need somewhat advanced knowledge.

I use Arch exclusively these days and its the best linux distro I've ever used.

The only time that I've ever had an update break my system was because of a bad nvidia drive like a year ago.  it took me about 5 minutes to fix.

Now that pacman has been fixed to not overwrite configuration files without warning/backup, I think it is the best package manager I've ever used.  Not once have I gone through some goofy dependency hell with it.  Also, soon there will be signed packages, which is my only complaint about the package system on arch.

Personally I think the idea of the AUR is great, because it offers a lot of choices, and leave the main team to work on the core and extra repos.

I like the unix style init scripts, especially with the addition of the rc.d (start|stop|whatever) command.

The installation is very fast and minimal, and is very easy to script for building customized builds for different purposes.

Arch is the fastest linux distribution that I've run.

All in all, I feel like Arch is a distro without the training wheels.  I have used tons of different distros, and for me, Arch is the best.  I use Arch in not only a private environment, but also in a professional environment.  We currently run over a thousand cloud instance on Arch, and have not yet had one problem.  I also used Arch for security and forensics analysis in my last job, and it was way better than HELIX, DEFT or Backtrack.

I'm not saying it would be right for you necessarily, I don't know your goals, nor do I know your experience level, but these are the reasons I use Arch.

why not use real Debian?  I would recommend the stable version of Debian (squeeze) before any of its' knockoffs.. once you can
nano /etc/apt/sources.list it, you can have anything you want

Debian is the best, hands down

I've tried a few. The ones I liked the most (in order from least the greatest) were:
Fedora
Arch-Linux
Gentoo
Debian
Crunchbang (Based off Debian. Been using it now for a few months)

I didn't like Ubuntu, personally.
Arch was nice, I liked that it was so light-weight and I learned a good bit about it when setting everything up manually.
Fedora was ok..
Gentoo was alright, I liked it just a little more than I did Fedora.
Debian was nice, it probably my second favorite distro.
Crunchbang is probably my favourite so far. Been using it for the past 3 or 4 months. I think I'll stick with it for a while.

Dunno why, but Ubuntu just pisses me off.

If you look into picking os, also look at the most used package.
1. .deb: Debian, Ubuntu or Linux Mint
2. .rpm: Fedora
3. Gentoo
for the other specific packages I haven't heard. Also remember that most packages come from sources (which can be compiled on any OS) or have the alternative .tar.gz (which also runs on any OS)
