How would someone go about detecting a software key-logger? And If one is found, how does one go about removal?

Try these three things, which I've listed in order of simplicity:
1) Run a virus scan.
2) Check background tasks, using task manager. Google any task you don't recognize.
3) Run Spybot S&D, and again Google for information on any tasks that you aren't familiar with.
