Partitioning my 1tb

Name: Anonymous 2010-07-09 14:27

Before I ask I need to preface this by saying I have no other option but to have a 1TB drive be a boot drive. Anyways I just wanted to ask really quickly what you people think is the best idea for partitions on my 1TB drive. I am going to be installing XP pro, and I wasnt sure how a system/data/programs idea should be setup.

Thanks in advance ;D

Should I install programs on the same partition the OS is on or make a seperate one for programs specifically?

I'd say that wouldn't matter, if you're going to backup the whole hard drive anyway.

What do you mean backup the whole hard drive?

Sorry, I am still confused. I want this to work because in the past I havnt been able to fix windows without destroying important information because of bad partitioning and no paritioning at all.

Sorry about that. I should have been more clear. What I meant was that it shouldn't matter if you make backups of important data. Especially daily backups. In fact, if you're really worried about it, get a second hard drive and use that solely for backup of the primary one.

here's what you do:
1.- partition hdd in 100Gb for windows and programs and leave the rest for documents/backup of progs part.
2.- install winxp on the first part.
3.- install all your progs and shit.
4.- go to your user folder (C:\Documents and Settings\Yourname) and cut (yes cut) the following folders: My Documents, Favorites and Desktop.
5.- go to the second partition and make a new folder, inside that folder, paste the folders you cut and that way anything you save to those places will automatically be saved on the second partition, thus not having to worry about losing data when your windows partition fucks up.
6.- get a hold of hiren's boot cd (http://www.hirensbootcd.net/download.html) and use norton ghost to make a... er... ghost of your system (just the first partition), save it to the second partition as well and use it to restore your windows/programs partition when it fucks up.
